BENEFITS OF VITAMIN B-12

My patients have been getting the benefits of vitamin B-12 since 1985, when I first began prescribing it to help relieve acute and chronic back pain.

The literature from the vitamin company I got vitamins from for my clinic, stated that it may take 1-3 months of taking vitamin B-12 to get best relief from pain and inflammation. To our surprise, pain relief was often much quicker!

Many of my patients who were taking pain medication prescribed by their medical doctor found that they could use less of the prescribed medication when also taking vitamin B-12.

Benefits of Vitamin B-12 Include:

1. Relief from Acute and Chronic Back Pain

2. Formation of healthy red blood cells

3. Increase your energy

4. Improve your concentration

5. Increases muscle strength

6. Improves balance

7. Helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels

8. Protection against brain atrophy and Alzheimer’s disease

9. Helps protect against cancers including breast, prostrate, lung, and colon cancer

Foods With Highest Amounts of Vitamin B-12

• Red meat

• Liver

• Eggs

• Milk

• Cheese

• Oysters

• King crab

• Fish-such as Trout, Salmon, Haddock, Tuna

People Especially at Risk for B-12 Deficiency

• Strict vegetarians

• Babies of mom’s who are strict vegetarians

• Heavy drinkers

• Smokers

• Pregnant and breast-feeding women

• Elderly

• People who have had gastrointestinal surgery

• People who have digestive disorders, such as Crohn's disease

The reason the elderly or people with digestive difficulties are at high risk for B-12 deficiency is that digestive disorders, and age, causes our stomach’s production of acid to decrease. This acid is needed for you to absorb B-12 from your diet.

If you aren’t absorbing enough B-12, you can’t make enough red blood cells which you need to carry oxygen and nutrients to all parts of your body. This results in all kinds of health problems.

Some people are so deficient in B-12 they develop B 12 deficiency anemia, and need to get monthly B-12 shots.

Recommended Daily Allowance for Vitamin B 12 is approximately 2-3 mcg/day but this should be confirmed by your doctor.

One of the benefits of vitamin B-12 supplements I use, is that B-12 is water soluble and that makes them very safe.

The Vegetarian Resource Group, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, recommends that strict vegetarians take regular B-12 supplements.
