You may think Fibromyalgia and back pain are two different problems. However, back pain is one of the symptoms Fibromyalgia causes. When I was attending chiropractic college in the early 1980’s, Fibromyalgia did not exist as a word. Before fibromyalgia there was “fibrositis” or “fibromyositis,” which means an overgrowth of muscle tissue leading to inflammation. It is now considered a syndrome, called Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS). The “algia” in fibromyalgia means pain, and it draws attention to the pain involved in this syndrome. FMS is a chronic disorder which causes pain in muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints.
The best thing I have ever come across for people with fibromyalgia and back pain is a two DVD program called the Fibro Fix. What causes Fibromyalgia and Back Pain?
For many people suffering with Fibromyalgia the cause is not known. Some doctors feel that genetic factors predispose certain individuals. For some reason the FMS patient experiences increased pain due to abnormal pain processing in the central nervous system. In a large percentage of patients the onset is brought on by a trauma, illness or injury to the body. My wife has suffered from this condition ever since she escaped from a house fire as a teenager. This stressful experience over stimulated her sympathetic nervous system. She got stuck in a “fight or flight response” pattern which, over time, made her body more sensitive to the environment. Since that time she has had widespread pain affecting most of her body. Women are affected with FMS far more frequently than men. My wife's symptoms started with frequent abdominal pain and acid reflux. Whenever she does anything physical that she is not used to, she experiences extreme fatigue, and muscle aches in whichever part of the body that she overused.
Most of the time she says she aches “all over"
Her pain and stiffness are worse in the morning and vary between stiffness, muscle aches, and shooting or stabbing pain. She also struggles with anxiety, fatigue, panic-attacks, depression and headaches, which are all common with Fibromyalgia. She has suffered with: • Upper, middle, and low back pain • Chest and rib pain for thirty years • Pain in the sides of her head • Pain in both shoulders • Pain in both knees • Pain in the jaw (TMJ) • Bad menstrual cramping • Numbness and tingling sensations • Swollen knees and calves • Muscle twitching • Fatigue • Dizziness • Panic attacks • Depression • Sensitivities to: Medications, Skin products, Loud noises, Odors, and many more For years she thought all her symptoms were separate problems. Many of her past doctors didn’t understand her symptom pattern and thought she was a hypochondriac. For much of her life she felt hopeless, isolated and overwhelmed. It wasn’t until our new family doctor took the time to complete a full history, exam and had blood work done to rule out other conditions, that my wife was finally diagnosed correctly. Part of the physical exam found a high number of tender points all over her body. A certain number of these tender points are found in all people diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

Treatment options for Fibromyalgia and Back Pain
The ones that have been helpful for my wife include:
• Fibromyalgia Diet
• Fibromyalgia Supplements
• Fibromyalgia Exercises
• Herbal Remedies
• Vitamin D
• Warm baths • Regular exercise • Daily yoga and stretching • Acupuncture
• Chiropractic Care
• Active Release Techniques • Graston Therapy • Therapeutic massage • A diet high in green leafy vegetables • Limited processed foods • Regular adequate sleep
My wife has been unsuccessful using medication for relief. Some people with Fibromyalgia are so sensitive to medication that they can’t take any. So even though our Medical Doctor finally diagnosed the problem, he wasn’t able to give her relief. What helped her most were all the lifestyle changes listed above combined with regular chiropractic adjustments, massage, and Graston therapy.
What is the Prognosis for Fibromyalgia and Back Pain?
The prognosis is uncertain. No one knows for sure what a fibromyalgia patient will be like years down the road.FMS is a chronic condition. Symptoms flare up and there are periods of relative calm. Some people become totally disabled by this disorder. Many others are able to lead full productive lives. Paying attention to all the things that make you feel worse, and all the things that help you to feel better, is an important part of the puzzle of Fibromyalgia. If a doctor prescribes a drug or recommends a treatment that causes you unpleasant side effects, you must communicate that with him/her. You must be your own best advocate. No-one knows what works for your body like you do. Keep trying different things until you find what works best for you. Remember Fibromyalgia and back pain are a common mix. If you are having back pain treated, and are having difficulty keeping it under control, Fibromyalgia may have to be ruled out. To Your Best Health, Dr. Cliff
