HEALTH BENEFITS OF VITAMIN D
Health benefits of vitamin D include the reduction of back pain. I have been taking it regularly to help me with the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis I have been troubled with for many years. Vitamin D is known to be important for keeping your bones and teeth strong, by helping your body absorb calcium. If you're not getting enough vitamin D you are, not able to absorb enough calcium, which leaves you at risk for developing Osteoporosis. This is especially true for women middle aged or older. Lack of vitamin D contributes to twice as much back pain in women, and, increases their risk for bone fractures. Interestingly, severe Vitamin D deficiency has been seen in many people under the age of 30, especially in women of childbearing age.
Why doctors are not prescribing Vitamin D for back pain relief is a mystery. Spine magazine published a study way back in 2003 that found health benefits of vitamin D included relief from persistent low back pain. In this study, all adults who were deficient in vitamin D, got relief from back pain when their vitamin D levels returned to normal.

Vitamin D is naturally made by your body if your skin is exposed to direct sunlight, even for just a short time each day. The problem is, that the amount of sun exposure needed to get enough vitamin D depends on your skin type, the time of year, and where you live. If you live in a northern part of the world, it may be difficult to get enough sunny days throughout the year to get adequate vitamin d produced in your body. If you’re from New England or northern Europe,it sure will be hard to get much sunlight on your skin from October through March when you have to wear layers of clothing to stay warm. Even if you live in a warm sunny climate, you may stay inside air conditioned homes, autos, and workplaces, on sunny days because it is so hot outside. You still aren’t getting enough vitamin D! Another problem is that many people are afraid to get any direct sunlight on their skin for fear of getting skin cancer. I realize that this is a legitimate fear. My own dad was in the sun a lot over the years and he’s had a lot of skin cancers removed, including melanoma. This is why I take vitamin d supplements every day. I don’t want to spend too much time in the sun and increase my chances of getting skin cancer, but I do need to get enough vitamin d to keep my calcium levels healthy, and to help me with the pain of Osteoarthritis.
Health Benefits of Vitamin D – How Much Do You Need?
Although the official recommended daily allowance of vitamin D is between 200-800 IU, new research is calling these levels outdated and too low. Researchers are now recommending 2000-40000 IU a day of vitamin D, in addition to about 1,000 mg of calcium. My wife and I are currently taking 1600 mg of vitamin d every day. And the good news is, that vitamin D is not expensive. It cost just pennies a day. Here is a link to Amazon where you can see the Vitamin D that my wife and I take daily.
