Low Back Pain Causes range from the very common muscle strain to uncommon spinal tumors. That is why if you rest your hurting low back and treat yourself at home, and your back pain isn’t getting better within two weeks you need to go to a health care provider who deals with back pain every day. What may seem like something minor is sometimes a much bigger deal than you think. My first episode of low back pain was caused from too much awkward lifting. Most low back pain is caused by muscle overuse which leads to strain and injury to the muscles, joints, ligaments, and discs that support your spine. Other causes of common low back pain are improper lifting of heavy loads such as bags of groceries and sitting too long at your desk or computer. It is crucial when you are lifting to keep weight in tight to your body and lift with your knees. It is also imperative that you take a short break from sitting every hour. Sitting puts three times as much unhealthy pressure on your low back than standing does. If you drive for a living you need frequent short breaks from sitting or your low back WILL pay a painful price.
The Most Common Low Back Pain Causes
Muscle Strain:
This is probably the most common of all Low Back Pain Causes. A muscle strain in the low back is an overstretch injury to the muscles and tendons in that area. This type of injury happens from overuse or improper use of low back muscles. It can also occur from trauma. Lumbar strains can happen at any age with severity ranging from mild to severe depending on the degree of the strain.
Muscle Sprains:
Low back sprains are joint injuries where some of the ligaments supporting the joint are torn. Low back sprains are most often caused by improper lifting, awkward bending and twisting, and poor posture. They happen more to people who are overweight and out of shape.
Poor Mattress:
A mattress that is too soft or is sagging is something that you may need to take more seriously for yourself and your family. The mattress that you sleep on every night will determine to a great extent, how pain free, energetic, and healthy your life will be. Sleeping on a good mattress really does make a huge difference in how your back feels.Spinal Subluxations: A subluxation is a back problem where two back bones lose their normal position or movement. Subluxations are one of the most common causes of low back pain and can only be corrected by a chiropractor because they are the only doctors trained to locate and remove subluxations.
Nerve Injuries:
The lower back is one of the most common areas in the body to suffer nerve injuries. Things that can irritate nerves are severe muscle spasms, disc herniations, and bone spurs that are found in people who have osteoarthritis and degenerative joint disease.
Osteoarthritis:
This type of arthritis is more common if you are over 40. The low back often develops osteoarthritis because the whole weight of your upper body is constantly pressing on the low back. Arthritic joints in the spine become inflamed causing low back pain.
Herniated Discs:
Herniated disc symptoms in the lower back can include pain, numbness, weakness, tingling, cramping, or muscle spasm in the back, buttock and leg. Disc Herniations can happen in lifting injuries or trauma, but more often they occur after a long period of degenerative disc disease that weakens the discs.
Spinal Stenosis:
Spinal Stenosis is a degenerative condition of the spinal column. It results in a narrowing of the openings in the spine that nerves come out of. This is another condition that develops more frequently as you age.
Osteoporosis:
This is a common cause of low back pain that is more common in women over 50 but does affect men also. Osteoporosis is most likely to affect you if you didn’t have enough calcium in your diet in your growing years. Fractures: For a fracture to occur in your lower back you would have to have a major trauma or accident. It does happen to people who only wear lap belts and are involved in an auto accident.
Pregnancy
: One of the low back pain causes that most women who have children experience is low back pain during pregnancy. You can imagine how gaining 25 to 50 pounds of weight hanging from your abdomen would put stress on your low back.
Spondylolisthesis
: This is a forward slippage of one of your back bones on another that can put pressure on spinal nerves. Spondylolisthesis is most common at the very bottom of your lower back. It is more common in girls than boys and can require surgery if it is bad enough.
Ankylosing Spondylitis:
This disease occurs in young people between the ages of 15 to 25. Low back pain and stiffness in the morning is the most common symptom. Ankylosing Spondylitis can be treated conservatively with exercises, chiropractic, and/or physical therapy to maintain normal flexibility and function of the back and hips.
Fibromyalgia:
Fibromyalgia is a disorder classified by the presence of chronic widespread pain. Many people don’t associate fibromyalgia as one of the low back pain causes.
Too much sitting
puts excessive strain on the muscles of your back often causing Back Pain. This is a common problem in the United States today with so much time being spent sitting at computers, typing on keyboards, playing video games, driving, etc.
Lack of exercise leading to weak muscles is one of the major reasons for back pain. If your muscles are not maintained with regular exercise you are much more likely to suffer an overuse injury while doing yard work, house cleaning, a sporting activity, or just playing with your children or grandchildren. Improper Lifting is another of the most common low back pain causes. Improper lifting is something hundreds of my patients have told me has caused their back pain. You have probably been told this more than once, but it is so important to hold anything heavy close to your body when lifting it up. Also you must bend your knees and lift with your legs. Don't bend over at the waist and lift with your back. Poor Posture is a problem that is becoming more and more widespread in our society due to the amount of time most of us spend sitting. You cant allow yourself to slouch your shoulders or let your head hang in front of your shoulders. This puts tremendous stress on your spine which eventually will cause you a lot of pain. If your unable on your own to keep your shoulders back and your head in line with your shoulders I suggest you get the help of a chiropractor. Most chiropractors focus on improving your spinal posture which will relieve a lot of your pain. Obesity is another contributing factor that makes it more likely that you will develop back pain. Being overweight has a lot of negative health consequences but having a lot of extra weight in your abdominal area is especially stressful on your lower back.
Less Common Low Back Pain Causes
Infection of the spine: Spinal infections are not one of the common low back pain causes, but do occur and can be dangerous. Infections occur more often in people with diabetes, drug or alcohol addictions, or patients taking steroid drugs. Aortic Aneurysms: An aortic aneurysm is a swelling of one of your body’s major blood vessels. Aneurysms cause a nagging chronic back pain. It they get too big they can rupture and cause death. Ovary problems: Problems in this area include cysts, fibroid tumors and endometriosis which are all low back pain causes. Kidney problems: Kidney stones or infections can cause low back pain. If a problem in this area is suspected urinalysis, ultrasound, and blood work may be necessary. Paget’s Disease: This is a disease that weakens bones and causes abnormal bone growth in the spine and pelvis. It is more common in people over 50 years old. It can cause low back pain.
