The Most Common Reasons for Back Pain are:

Lower Back Sprain is one of the most common reasons for back pain. Back Sprains happen when the ligaments holding bones together are torn from their attachments. Sprains happen with quick, unexpected movements. This could occur at work or in a car accident, or playing a weekend sport without properly warming up.

Spinal Subluxations are misalignments or loss of normal movement in one of the bones in your back. They are caused by stress, accidents and injuries, and if left untreated will cause you a lot more trouble than just back pain.

Trigger Points are painful areas in muscles that cause radiating pain when they are pressed on. The painful point can be felt as a hard knot or tight band in the muscle. Trigger Points can occur in over 400 muscles in your body. You know when you have found one because they are very sensitive to touch.

Lower Back Strains are one of the most common reasons for back pain. Low back strains happen when muscles are overstretched or torn. This is often the result of seasonal activities like shoveling snow, raking leaves, spring or fall cleaning, or planting and gardening.

Arthritis is another of the most common reasons for back pain. The type of arthritis most often seen in the spine is Osteoarthritis, sometimes called Degenerative Joint Disease. This is a progressive disease that is most common in the hands but is often found in the bones of the back as well. This condition is seen on x-ray and is more common as you age. It is thought that if you maintain normal back function and motion with certain exercises, stretches and regular back adjustments, that arthritis can be prevented or postponed.

Poor Quality Mattress is responsible for more back pain than you can believe. Sleeping on a firm mattress can do wonders in relieving backaches. The extra support of a firm mattress will certainly help in a painful arthritic back condition.

Too much sitting puts excessive strain on the muscles of your back often causing Back Pain. This is a common problem in the United States today with so much time being spent sitting at computers, typing on keyboards, playing video games, driving, etc.

Spinal Stenosis is an age-related disease caused when the openings in the spine where the nerves come out of, become smaller. This often causes pain running down the leg (sciatica), which makes walking difficult. This condition is found with x-ray, CT scan, or MRI. This can be a difficult problem to treat successfully. Choosing the right doctor is essential for this condition.

Osteoporosis is another of the common reasons for back pain. It is a degenerative condition which weakens bone. It is most common in females over fifty, but affects both men and woman as they become older. Millions of people in the United States are affected by osteoporosis each year. Osteoporosis typically causes terrible back pain for those who suffer fractures of the bones in the back due to bone weakening. This disease often affects bones in the hip and wrist in addition to the back. It has been known for a long time that many steroid drugs used to treat arthritis and asthma cause osteoporosis. Recent findings have been reported that show that the most commonly prescribed medications for Acid-Reflux, like Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevaced, dramatically increase the number of fractures related to Osteoporosis.

Herniated Discs are common reasons for back pain. Most people who have a herniated disc have suffered with back pain for some time. Wear and tear on the spine can weaken the disc, allowing the jelly-like center of the disc to squirt out. This can cause a pinched nerve which often leads to severe pain running down the leg. The pain of a herniated disc often causes a person to lean forward or to one side.

Pinched Nerves are nerves that are not able to function normally due to pressure on them. This often results in pain radiating down an arm or leg. Nerves are often pinched in the spine when a disc herniates. They can also be “Pinched” by pressure anywhere along the path the nerve travels.

Pregnancy is one of the reasons for back pain that the majority of pregnant women experience. As your baby grows inside your uterus your abdomen gets bigger and bigger. You could gain 25-50 pounds during pregnancy. Most of the weight gain is in the abdomen which causes your weight center to shift forward putting strain on your back.

Fibromyalgia , or Fibromyalgia Syndrome, is a condition that causes muscle, tendon, ligament, and joint pain, along with chronic fatigue. It is one of the causes of back pain that needs to be ruled out.

Spondylolisthesis is a forward dislocation of one vertebra over the one beneath it producing pressure on spinal nerves. Spondylolisthesis is most common at the very bottom of the spine. Back pain is the most frequent symptom and usually starts during the teenage growth spurt. This condition is more common in girls than boys and some cases slip so far that surgery is necessary.

Ankylosing Spondylitis occurs in young people between the age of 15 and 35. Low back pain and stiffness in the morning is the most common symptom. Sometimes pain radiates from the back into the buttock, hip, or thigh on one or both sides.

The first sign of Ankylosing Spondylitis on an x-ray is a squaring of the back bones, making them look like blocks. After ruling out rheumatoid arthritis and other possible causes of similar symptoms, Ankylosing Spondylitis can be treated conservatively with exercises, chiropractic, and/or physical therapy to maintain normal motion and function in the back and hips. Anti-inflammatory medications can help relieve pain and stiffness caused by Ankylosing Spondylitis. For information on Ankylosing Spondylitis treatment click here.

Aortic aneurysms are one of the more dangerous reasons for back pain. An aortic aneurysm is a swelling of one of the major blood vessels of the body. It often causes a nagging, chronic back pain. I have had a number of patients come to me for back pain relief that I found on my x-ray exam to have dangerously large aneurysms that needed surgery. If one of these aneurysms ruptures, it usually causes a quick death.

Improper Lifting is another of the most common reasons for back pain. Improper lifting is something hundreds of my patients have told me has caused their back pain. You have probably been told this more than once, but it is so important to hold anything heavy close to your body when lifting it up. Also you must bend your knees and lift with your legs. Don't bend over at the waist and lift with your back.

Poor Posture is a problem that is becoming more and more widespread in our society due to the amount of time most of us spend sitting. You cant allow yourself to slouch your shoulders or let your head hang in front of your shoulders. This puts tremendous stress on your spine which eventually will cause you a lot of pain. If your unable on your own to keep your shoulders back and your head in line with your shoulders I suggest you get the help of a chiropractor. Most chiropractors focus on improving your spinal posture which will relieve a lot of your pain.

Obesity is another contributing factor that makes it more likely that you will develop back pain. Being overweight has a lot of negative health consequences but having a lot of extra weight in your abdominal area is especially stressful on your lower back.

Lack of exercise leading to weak muscles is one of the major reasons for back pain. If your muscles are not maintained with regular exercise you are much more likely to suffer an overuse injury while doing yard work, house cleaning, a sporting activity, or just playing with your children or grandchildren.

Infections of the spine are not one of the most common reasons for back pain, but they can cause back pain and can be dangerous. They are sometimes a cause of back pain in people with diabetes, drug addictions, alcoholic addictions, or patients on steroid drugs. When a person has severe back pain without a history of trauma, infection must be ruled out. Some infections can be seen on regular x-rays, but CT or MRI scans and certain blood tests are often done in addition to a history and physical exam to accurately diagnose infection. Infections in the back (spinal infections), can also occur after a back surgery. Infections are more common in smokers and patients who have a nutritionally poor diet, diabetes or are obese.

Tumors of the back or spinal cord are one of the scariest reasons for back pain. Back pain is often the first sign of having a tumor. Tumors from other areas of the body can also cause back pain. I had a twenty year old young man come to my office wanting relief from back pain. He had gone to his medical doctor first and was given muscle relaxers. The medication wasn’t helping so he thought a few spinal adjustments would help.

It would have been easy for me to go ahead and provide that for him because he had already been to his MD. I was pretty sure that this fellow’s pain must be musculoskeletal and chiropractic adjustments would work well for him. However, I did a complete history and physical exam before beginning any treatment. I noticed unusual stiffness in this young man's stomach and abdomen. Instead of treating him as he was pleading with me to do, I told him to go immediately back to his medical doctor. I told him that the cause of his back pain was something much more than his MD had originally thought.

This young man’s sister called me two weeks later. There had been a huge tumor in one of this man’s testicles. The surgeon who removed it told the family that if another week had gone by, the tumor would have burst and this patient would probably have died.

The moral of this story is that you need to be confident that your health care provider can find the real causes of back pain in your back before you lose valuable time in getting the proper treatment started.
