WHICH TREATMENT FOR SCIATIC NERVE PAIN WILL END YOUR SCIATICA?

Treatment for Sciatic Nerve Pain is something I’ve provided to thousands of patients over the last three decades. I understand that pain running down your leg is a horrible thing to try to live with. This page will tell you how to get rid of that pain.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is pain running down your leg due to irritation of your sciatic nerve. The pain is usually felt in your buttocks, and radiates down the back of your leg. The pain sometimes travels all the way to your feet. Sciatic pain is usually felt in one leg, but can affect both legs at the same time. The pain of sciatica can be sharp, dull, burning, aching, numb, or cramping; and it can be occasional or constant.

What Makes Sciatica Pain Worse?

Anything that increases pressure on the sciatic nerve will make the pain worse. Things such as sneezing, coughing, or straining to have a bowel movement may aggravate the pain. Patients usually feel a deep pain in the buttocks and posterior thigh that is made worse by sitting, squatting, or climbing stairs.

The first Treatment for Sciatic Nerve Pain that you should use is to stop doing any activity that aggravates the leg pain. If standing or sitting too long worsens your leg pain, try not to do those things. Rest gives your body time for the inflammation in the nerve to subside.

Chiropractic care - I saw patients every day that needed treatment for sciatic nerve pain. Chiropractic treatment to the lower back, combined with electrical muscle stimulation and soft tissue therapy, provides very effective treatment for sciatic nerve pain for the majority of people with sciatica. If their pain extended below the knee it was more difficult and took longer to treat than pain in the posterior thigh that didn’t travel below the knee. A chiropractor will also be able to treat a piriformis problem if that is causing your sciatic nerve pain.

Ice therapy will reduce inflammation and help bring relief from sciatica.

Heat therapy relaxes muscle spasms and improves flexibility to tight buttock and thigh muscles.

A Good Mattress is essential for speedy recovery from sciatica and any other pain syndrome.

A Back Pain Chair will keep pressure off your spine that could be causing sciatica.

Low impact aerobic exercises such as walking, biking, and swimming, will keep all the muscles strong that support your back.

I found that sleeping on your back with a small pillow under your knees, or on your side with a small pillow between your knees helped a lot. Although some rest from activities that aggravate the pain is a good treatment for sciatic nerve pain, remaining as active as possible is better for recovery than getting complete bed rest.

When do I need to see a Medical Doctor?

If conservative treatment like rest, ice, heat, chiropractic, herbal therapy, nutritional therapy, or homeopathy, is not giving you relief quickly enough, your medical doctor can prescribe anti-inflammatory medications, steroid injections, and even surgery in a small number of cases.

If you ever start having trouble with bowel or bladder function, numbness around your genitals, progressive leg weakness, or foot drop (difficulty lifting toes up when walking), seek medical attention immediately.
