Upper Back Pain Causes My severe Upper Back Pain was caused by a traumatic accident. There are also many Upper Back Pain Causes that don’t involve trauma or an accident. I have had patients who had Upper Back Pain from:
• Spinal Subluxations
• A Poor Mattress
• A Poor Pillow
• Trigger Points
• Spinal Stenosis
• Pinched Nerves
• Fibromyalgia
• Arthritis
• Ankylosing Spondylitis
• Osteoporosis
• Disc herniation
• Poor Posture
• Holding arms over-head for long periods (Hairdressers, Electricians, Painters) • Awkward working positions • Improper sitting positions • Improper lifting • Weak back muscles • Lack of exercise • Large breasts • Cancer
Poor Posture is a problem that is not taken seriously in our country. I used to take pictures from the front and side of all new patients. I used “grid film” which allows measurements of abnormal posture. I would measure how far forward the patient’s head was from his/her shoulder. I would measure how much lower one shoulder was than the other. Measurements were taken to see if the shoulder-blades were level and not winging (pointing backwards instead of laying flat).

• Your ear should be directly above your shoulder • Your shoulder should be directly above your hip • Your hip should be in line with the bone at the outside of your ankle • There should not be too much rounding of your back (Kyphosis) If your head is forward of your shoulders, that shows you have a muscle imbalance. It shows there is a lot of stress being put on your neck and upper back. This could be the cause of Upper Back and Neck Pain, as well as headaches and other symptoms. If your shoulders aren’t level, or there is winging of your shoulder blades, that also shows that you have a muscle imbalance that could be causing Upper Back Pain. Prolonged sitting puts excessive strain on the muscles of your upper back often causing Burning Upper Back Pain. This is a common problem in the United States today with so much time being spent sitting at computers, typing on keyboards, playing video games, driving, etc. All this sitting contributes to a condition called “Upper Crossed Syndrome”. This syndrome causes postural imbalances that lead to a cycle of Dysfunction, Pain, and Weakness. One of the indications of this syndrome is very tight Upper Trapezius (Trap) muscles. The Trapezius is the big muscle at the top of both your shoulders. Tight “Trap” muscles are causing Upper Back and shoulder pain in tens of thousands of patients. Spinal Subluxation, often called Vertebral Subluxation, is another common Upper Back Pain Cause. A Subluxation is where the bones of your spine (vertebra) have lost their proper position and cause nerve irritation. Doctors of Chiropractic are the only health care providers who are trained to locate and remove this common cause of Upper Back Pain. One of the most common upper back pain causes is sitting for long periods at your computer. So make sure to take at least a 30 to 60 second break every hour to stretch your back backward. Try some trunk twists. When you get home at the end of the day stretch your back on an exercise ball. This is tremendous for overcoming the negative effects of sitting at a desk or computer with your shoulders slumped forward.
